User Presentation award

Presenting at a UK DB2 User Group meeting does make demands of your personal time for research. There are rewards, however:

We are now able to announce a further reward. In order to provide some compensation for the time you spend preparing your material the Group will provide a cash award of £200 to speakers who present at our User Group.

Who is elegible?

The award is open to anyone who works with DB2 at a user site. Vendors of DB2 tools and Consultants are excluded from this scheme, not because their contribution is not highly valued, but on the grounds that presenting is part of their business. In most cases it is obvious whether you are a vendor or not. However there may be grey areas and if you are in any doubt please contact the chairman. The ultimate decision will be taken by a vote of the Committee, and their decision is final.

What is elegible?

To qualify there must be some written material supporting the content of the presentation, usually in the form of Powerpoint slides.

More Details

The award is payable once per one hour presentation. If you want to make a shorter presentation, which we welcome, the size of the award will be reduced pro-rata. So, for example, a half hour presentation would earn £100.

If more than one person is involved in giving and researching the presentation then the award is divided between them, it is not payable separately to each. However, in this regard, if one of the parties is a vendor then they would not be entitled to a share. So, for example, if 3 people produce a presentation, one is a vendor and two are from a DB2 user site, then each of the users would receive £100 and the vendor would not receive an award.

The award applies to presentations at our normal DB2 User group meetings and also to presentations in the DB2 stream of the annual GSE conference.

What form will the award take?

It will be in the form of a cheque drawn on the UK DB2 User Group account.

Note that as a speaker your attendance fee will also be waived. If you cannot claim them from any other source, your travel expenses for the day will also be reimbursed but this must be agreed beforehand.

Copyright

Your presentation remains your own, but you must provide the User Group with royalty free rights to make the presentation available on our website. You must also give us permission to publicise the fact that an award was made.

What about my company's rules regarding donations?

Compliance with the terms of your employment remains your responsibility. If you are not allowed to receive such awards under the terms of your employment you may request that the cheque be issued to a charity of your choice, or even to your employer. The award is not mandatory, of course! You may decline it if you wish.

Process

If you have an idea for a presentation please let the chairman know. He will inform you if the idea qualifies for an award, and will discuss agenda details such as the duration and when you are likely to be ready.

The decision for whether the topic is of general interest to the group and therefore should be included in the agenda, and how long to give it, will be taken by the Chairman with a vote by the Committee if necessary. Their decision is final. That said, there is a bias in favour of user speakers and anything which is generally related to DB2 features or experiences is likely to be approved.

At this point, if you wish us to do so, we will be able to assign you with a mentor. This is likely to be someone on the Committee with experience of presenting who will be happy to lend occasional advice on the creation of your presentation or to review it before you give it.

When your place on the agenda is confirmed, at this point the size of the award and the number of involved parties should be known and will be confirmed to you by email, along with any likely expenses. Please try to be realistic in estimating the duration of your presentation. If you have a one hour slot but your presentation is over after 10 minutes then a reduced amount would be paid, more in line with the time actually taken.

After you have given the presentation the cheque(s) will be posted to you by the User Group Treasurer.
